Chapter 8: Distribution and Logistics

E-ACTIVITY: E-COMMERCE (p. 302)

Activity: Investigate the Advantages and Disadvantages of E-Commerce

Since Canada leads North America in consumer "connectivity," with 60 percent of Canadians online in 2001, some marketers see the Internet as a great opportunity to sell their products and services. But why don't more businesses sell online and why don't more consumers buy online? In this activity, you will investigate the pros and cons of e-commerce.

  1. Visit the following Web sites for information on e-commerce in Canada:

Divide a sheet of paper in quarters. In one quarter, put all pros or advantages of e-commerce for consumers, and in an adjacent quarter, put all the cons or disadvantages to the consumer. In the remaining two quarters, list the pros and cons for businesses that sell either to other businesses or to consumers.

  1. With a partner, prepare a role-play based on one of the following scenes:

    1. a marketer explaining to a retailer the advantages and disadvantages of e-commerce for either business-to-business or business-to-consumer marketing and sales

    2. a marketer explaining to a consumer the advantages and disadvantages of e-commerce.
